Hosted at Bernie Grundman Mastering, each of these videos document the mastering process for singles by the artists Post Malone, Kim Gordon, and Tyler, the Creator. Bozzi gives an overview of his past, equipment he uses, and his general approach to projects. He then tackles each record, commenting on the mixes and demonstrating how they can be sonically enhanced. Aside from sharing his mastering techniques, Mike elaborates on a variety of pertinent subjects that include mastering singles vs. albums, loudness trends, quality control, and determining the artist's vision.
Mastering Pharrell Williams & Caparezza with Gavin Lurssen & Reuben Cohen

The two engineers give an overview of the passive mastering console and modified outboard chain they use on a daily basis, alongside detailed explanations of how each piece of gear affects the audio. Cohen opens the mix of ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams and recalls the original mastering settings, taking you through every step of the process and comparing mastered vs. unmastered versions. Lurssen does similar with ‘Ti Fa Stare Bene’ by Caparezza, revealing why he made certain decisions with particular gear. This comprehensive workshop covers a number of topics pertinent to modern mastering, including studio design, monitoring, analog vs. digital workflow, loudness, and much more. Chris shares his background and discusses the evolution of his workflow throughout the past decades, explaining why he eventually chose to work fully ‘in the box’. He compares and contrasts hybrid versus fully-digital workflow, providing a number of pros and cons to each from the perspectives of sonic character, reliability, and convenience. Mastering Damon Albarn & Fete Sad Girls with John Davis
Full video available exclusively on https://mwtm.org/jd-damon-albarn For the first time on MWTM, renowned mastering engineer John Davis reveals his techniques and shares knowledge acquired from decades in the music business! Hosted at Metropolis Studios in London, this series covers a wide range of topics related to John’s vocation. He describes the purpose of each tool he uses, compares the qualities of analog and digital formats, and demonstrates his workflow on two contrasting projects – ‘Royal Morning Blue’ by Damon Albarn and ‘Hannah’ by Fete Sad Girls. The former is mastered from half inch tape and altered with subtlety, whereas the latter is mastered from an audio file and treated more drastically to achieve desired results. Aside from teaching his methods, Davis elaborates on other topics at the forefront of any mastering career. These include dynamic range compression in broadcasting, managing clients’ expectations, charging appropriately, and being flexible.

For his debut series, the veteran mastering engineer gives an overview of his background, the evolution of his job over time, and how he approaches projects on a daily basis. Geoff takes you through his analog signal path and explains the playback-to-capture computer setup. He comments on advancements in clocking and digital conversion, and illustrates why he typically aims to restrict all of his processing to the simple analog chain. Pesche also elaborates on some intrinsic elements of his vocation, including bit depth, sample rates, monitoring, and headroom. He demonstrates his techniques on two mixes – ‘Just a Play’ by R-SHIE and ‘Act 1: Liberator of Minds’ by Dead Can Dance.

For her MWTM debut, Idania gives a comprehensive walkthrough of her philosophy, workflow, and techniques. Demonstrating her expertise on six different projects, she conveys how to efficiently use a handful of plug-ins to consistently achieve results on par with high-end analog chains. Using Sequoia as her DAW of choice, Valencia opens up sessions containing the mixes received and her final masters of records by Fiji Blue, James Arthur, Lucrezia, Moyka, Francis Karel, and The Maine ft. Taking Back Sunday & Charlotte Sands. She takes you through every software insert of her signal chains, thoroughly explaining why she used certain tools and settings based on the source material. In every case, Idania bypasses plug-ins to reveal subtle enhancements, and she compares the audio received with her masters. Furthermore, she covers pertinent aspects of the job that include sample rate conversion, bit depth, monitoring, and translation.
